Music Invasion: Shakespear's Sister's "Stay"

>> Sunday, January 25, 2009

I got reminded about this group and this song by yesterday's meme. It was a big deal in 1992, well for me anyway. I was a fan of Bananarama (yes, for shame), and Siobhan Fahey left and formed Shakespear's Sister with Marcella Detroit. The group decidedly went for a much darker and more offensive approach, it's way less pop princessy as Bananarama which is way more refreshing to me than anything.

This song here had me sold. Marcella's soprano is amazing and I think Siobhan's voice complimented hers harmoniously. It's like the ancient struggle between good and evil. I sing this song sometimes and try my damnedest to hit the high note. Too bad the group didn't last long. (Both members are now about 50 years old)

Stay

If this world is wearing thin
And you're thinking of escape
I'll go anywhere with you
Just wrap me up in chains
But if you try to go alone
Don't think I'll understand

Stay with me, stay with me...

In the silence of your room
In the darkness of your dreams
You must only think of me
There can be no in between
When your pride is on the floor
I'll make you beg for more

Stay with me, stay with me...

You'd better hope and pray
That you'd make it safe
Back to your own world
You'd better hope and pray
That you'll wake one day
Back in your own world
Coz' when you sleep at night
They don't hear your cries
In your own world
Only time will tell
If you can break the spell
Back in your own world

Stay with me, stay with me...
