Blog Intro: People of Walmart (Swimsuit Edition)

>> Thursday, October 29, 2009

As I was entering my building yesterday after shopping for groceries, a bunch of people got in the building along with me and one of the 20-something girls touched my sleeve and says "Well, you're cute. What do you think about giving me your number?" I appreciate her compliment and thanked her then blurted out that I'm not interested in girls. She proceed to jokingly refer her male companion to me but by then I'm already out of sight.

At night I went to watch the World Series at a neighborhood gay bar. It was a lot of fun with loud fans huffing and hawing about the game. High-fiving with strangers, a young gentleman rubbed his face against mine right after the 8th inning, he's probably high or drunk that's the only explanation to reason his behavior. I take this sudden act of friendliness to be a compliment.

It's great to be at a place with so many excited people when our team, The Phillies, are winning, I doubt that it'd be fun if "we" are losing. Since the only leather/bear bar in town is rumored to be closing soon with a notice at the front door for proof. This neighborhood sports bar could be a replacement, people seems friendly enough.

These pictures are from People of Walmart. If you haven't check them out yet, do!

Looks like an over-sexified extra on MadMen.

Apparently no one is eating Gilbert's grape or any other fruits or vegetables.

Pregnant stripper?! Do you have to pay extra?

Looks like one of those toys that won't fall.

The silhouette of the body is so altered that it has become inspiring.

My gay brother needs some help.

I hope there's blood circulation somehow.

Laundry Day?

I like a hairy guy but not Sasquatch here trying be normal around humans.

Um, this is attractive, how? Just because it looks funny in a souvenir shop doesn't mean you HAVE to buy it.

Now for some rare eye candy:

Hot!!!

Finally got a new computer. Sorry folks, but it's a PC laptop. After reading your comments, I was tempted to get a mac. But I'm not very familiar with macs and after an unsatisfactory test drive and seeing that $400 hike on the price tag for the lowest cost Macbook, I settled for an Asus laptop instead. Knock on wood but everything seems pretty good for my first day on it. No screaming fan noise after 5 minutes of usage, no crash, everything seems pretty fast. It's a bit bulkier than I expected. a 15.6" screen. The scroll button is a bit awkward plus I'm not very used to Windows 7 but it'll do. I just have to suffer not being able to move as smoothly and as fast playing Bejeweled Blitz but it'll have to do. I swear my next computer purchase will be a Mac, unless Windows 7 is every bit as good as they say it is which is doubtful.

Phew... feel like I'm free again.

It is really some bad juju. My laptop of 5~6 years is going down fast. It's been crashing on and off from yesterday morning. Not good. It tends to crash whenever I do anything that requires a lot of flash memory. Like playing games or just plain browsing online. It hangs to a blue screen saying cache problems and physical dumping memory... etc. I can't usually reboot it until resting it for a few hours.

Actually it kinda happens randomly, even when I put the laptop down for a sec, so it could be hardware and not software. Uninstalled Firefox, did a disc cleanup. I was gonna take it apart and blow the dust off since it's been heating up a bit anyway but then I'm afraid I wouldn't be able to put it back together. It's too bad, I guess I'll have to get a new one.

So maybe I won't be posting anything online for a few days until I decide on a new candidate and acquire it from an online store. If you have any ideas how I can fix or a recommendation of a relatively inexpensive and reliable laptop, please send leave me a message. Thanks.

Blog Intro: People of Walmart (Volume 1)

>> Sunday, October 25, 2009

I've been enjoying the blog, People of Walmart. It's a deep dark guilty pleasure. I even thought about going to Walmart with a camera for the sole purpose of taking pictures of potential candidates.

Don't get me wrong, I don't hate the establishment for its people. Everybody loves low prices. Though putting mom and pop shops out of business, locking illegal Latinos at night to clean out the store and have them arrested in the morning and using child labors for their products is a bit shall we say unethical?

Well, People of Walmart is a real gem and from the attached pictures, you might understand why I'm promoting it.

The living Elvis and his impostor bodyguard.

Age was never the issue.

God created suspenders, you stretch them to their limits.

Change the color to white and you have your nuthouse costume.

Santa during the rest of the year.

Make no sense buying an expensive dress and just wear it once.

Childcare is not her strong suite.

He wants to be a dog and the floor IS clean.

Rapunzel must have a strong back.

It's all for Halloween.

The Walmart mascot was a girl???

Hope you enjoyed!

Weekend Meme: Random Survey For The Bored

>> Saturday, October 24, 2009

This week went by a little fast with the boyfriend studying hard and my dining with the ladies here and there. Halloween was but a week away. I'm getting a little excited thinking about the costume I'm going to create for myself. One week will go by fast.

This week's meme is borrowed from Kwizgiver's blog entitled What If This is As Good As It Gets?. It's the motherlode of memes, quizzes and all things alike.

What is on your desktop wallpaper?
Since my laptop broke down a few months ago, I have yet to reload my old sets of Webshots pictures. Now I have the typical Windows XP sky and grass fields on the background.

What is your favorite zoo animal?
I did enjoy the zoo when I was a kid, my favorite for seeing and feeding the elephant. Do they allow that here? Of course, if I get to go to a zoo that has pandas, like Sue did, my answer might change.

What was your favorite toy as a child?
I'm a big fan of transforming robots and magical armors like Voltron and Saint Seiya. Too bad I wasn't allowed a lot of toys.

What food do you eat too much of?
Chocolate. I love anything chocolatey.

What kind of hairstyle do you have?
Short to medium short. I don't really know how to describe it. Usually I'd gel it up front.

What was your favorite activity in gym class?
A buddy and I invented a game where we'd use two ping pong paddle to keep a badminton shuttle cock up the air. We have our own side of court and try to strike it to the other player's side. It's pretty good cardio.

What is on the shirt you are wearing right now?
It says Drexel University. I needed to feel like I belong.

What is the picture nearest to you of?
It would be a series of portrait on my desktop that I took on Outfest with the boyfriend. They were free portraits taken by a photographer. I never look right in pictures.

What kind of salad dressing do you like?
I like blue cheese, caesar and some vinegar and oil mixes.

Whats your least favorite food?
Dried oysters. Good for broth but it should be discarded immediately after. It's one of the most nastiest thing I've ever tasted.

What do you do on a Sunday night?
Typically, I would watch the fox cartoons with the boyfriend.

If you could only use one condiment on your food for the rest of your life, what would it be?
The Chinese has a salty ginger scallion oil mixture that really get my appetite going. In a more typical setting, I'd say mayo. I have mayo with rice before. Not something I'd recommend but I'd do it if nothing else is available.

What color are your sheets?
Blue. I have a deep affinity with blue clothing and cloth alike.

How big is your computer display?
About 16 inches.

What pair of shoes do you wear most often?
My sandals. I wear it most of the time unless it's cold in the winter.

What is your favorite game?
I love video games. Corny as it is but World of Warcraft would be my favorite. Though I don't recommend using a laptop for it.

What is your favorite Thanksgiving food?
I only know turkey and stuffing to be thanksgiving food. Probably rice and gravy if it's available.

What is your favorite pizza topping?
My favorite pizza contains sausage, pineapple, onion and mushrooms. To single out a specific topic, it'd be mushrooms.

What time do you plan on waking up tomorrow?
10ish.

What is your favorite day of the year?
From X'mas eve dinner to opening presents on X'mas day.

Have a great weekend!

The Deposition Experience

>> Friday, October 23, 2009

I have been going to the same barber for the past 8 years. I followed him from one store to another store and now he owns his very own beauty salon. I call him my barber because I already feel embarrassed enough that I go to a beauty salon to get my haircut without calling him my hair stylist or hair dresser. Butch men like me just need a barber. *~*

Well, over the years, we had grown to be friends. I tip well and we got to know each other, I give him extra cash when he get married and when he got kids. He asks for my help whenever there's some wordy letters in English that got sent to him and I've been to his place helping him with his computer and all. So last time when I got my haircut he asked if I was available yesterday early morning. Apparently someone fell in the pavement of his storefront two years ago and is now suing him for money. He needs someone to help translate. It's not like I have anything better to do and I like to help a friend so despite my not doing morning habit, I said yes. Besides, who wants to piss off their own barber, right?

The barber works 7 days a week, 10 hours a day, a hard worker which he needs to be, his third kid will be born in about a week. (He had only been married for 4 years, can you believe it?) The man has not take a single day of vacation since his own store opened 3 years ago, until the recent frequent trips to Brooklyn where his wife is staying with her own family so someone can keep an eye on the other kids. You've got to admire the tenacity, and I do.

So that's what I did, waking up at the god awful hour of 7:30 "AM" to get ready for a 9:00 meeting in my best slacks and shirt, wearing uncomfortable black leather shoes. Kevin didn't give me specific information on the lawsuit. I was more than curious and protective, no one mess with my barber! Since he himself told me that he never saw anyone fell down in front of his storefront, I believe him. It sounded like a trivial lawsuit to begin with, who falls down on the street and sues the store owner. I was brought up in a country where you blame yourself for your own clumsiness and I think most people in Chinatown or even beyond would feel the same way.

But when his lawyer showed me the photos of the pavement circa 2007, it was a little bad. It was obvious more than just uneven, there's a distinctive crack and a lowered portion. Though, obvious enough that anyone who's paying attention when they are walking by could have stepped over it. Plus it was right next to a bicycle rack and regular pedestrians will really have to walk to or from the bike rack to reach that spot. Since my barber had taken out a million dollar insurance, the lawyer and any claims would be paid for so it wasn't the point. With another kid coming and his business, he just doesn't want to take any more time off. Though he has his doubts...

On the day of the supposedly incident, he hasn't seen anything out of the ordinary. No one screamed or yelled. No ambulance, no cops, no nothing. From the pictures, the supposedly victim, a lady in her late 40s was in clutches with a cast on one of her feet. I don't know about you but when I fall, I'm more likely to get my arm fracture from trying to break my fall. How do you exactly break your foot when you fall? And then a guy supposedly the lady's husband or boyfriend took some several pictures by the crack on the pavement. In all these pictures, they both look quite happy. I'm not too sure they are happy because they are conditioned to act that way while getting their own pictures taken or maybe they found a crack that's convincing. Since the victim weren't in any of the pictures by the crack, for all I know that guy could be just some guy making a living by taking pictures next to malformed pavements on the street and resell those pictures.

The deposition took place a few floors below his lawyer's office. There was a court appointed translator present, so my help wasn't exactly needed but my barber feels better with my presence so I stayed. The court appointed translator is a grease ball kinda Asian man in his mid 50s. He was quite a trip; he was chatting up the victim talking about how the younger generation doesn't have much appreciation for the elderly and then trying to tell lame jokes to my barber and all. It was strange and I couldn't stand him much. At the same time, he speaks English with a heavy accent and he couldn't exactly translate correctly. I was really cringing but I couldn't speak in the setting. I wonder how many of these deposition was screwed up because of a bad translator and I'm wondering maybe it's a cause that I should take up. Since my barber has insurance and the lawyer thought it would be quite straight forward there's nothing I needed to say. I can tell that she doesn't care for this case by her uninvolved attitude. Though I still let her know that these kinds of cases happens too frequently in Chinatown in which she says she knows. I guess she rather pay the victim than go through the trouble. There's insurance so no one could blame her. The economy is bad, people have to find creative ways to get paid.

The pavement had since been fixed to perfection, so these things hopefully won't happen again.

Let's Go, Phillies!

>> Wednesday, October 21, 2009

Philadelphia had been buzzing with the news that our baseball team, the mighty Phillies are almost at the point where they will make the World Series. By the way, what makes that the 'World' series? Not very worldly if you ask me, there are people playing baseball in Japan and Taiwan and... Um, whatever. Well, Philadelphia is quite excited about our team making such prowess. It seems to be THE topic that everyone has lingering on and I don't blame them. Even a person like me who doesn't know much about baseball had learned something and quite proud to acquire some butch facade.

Last year when 'we' won the world series, car were flipped, stores were looted, fans were celebrating like pirates. So since the economy had gone so downwards, I'm thinking about my needs so the time comes, I know which stores to stand around. Too bad we don't have an Apple store in Center City, I would love an air book, a couple of iPhones and iPods if not for the resale value. I'm sure the luggage store learned their lessons from last year and got insurance and some metal gates. To my surprise, they are have helicopters, riding cops and painting lamp posts and tree with grease as a prevention mechanism.

Store front were encouraged to board up their windows on night where there are matches. Out new street corner solar compacters (trash bins) were picked up and replaced by cheaper, harder to climb metal trash baskets that get chained to aforementioned petroleum jelly-greased up lamp posts. All on a night that is not even the World Series finals. I guess we are just looking for an excuse to lash out and riot.

Maybe during the World Series, I can go watch the game at the local bear bar. It's always so much fun to feel the testosterone around you and feel excited along with everyone else. Besides, I should really get something out of the deal if I can't get any looted merchandise for sale. Drunken, excited baseball fan and petroleum jelly on posts should be a killer combination.

More Than Meets The Eye

Riding the Halloween costume wave, one of my friend posted this video on Facebook entitled Best Halloween Costume Ever and well it sorta is...

Very impressive indeed, real head lights and plastic. It'd be good to serve as a car dealership's mascot, which he seems to be. After searching around on YouTube, there are others who do it in variant degrees for Halloween and other comic fests too:

Personally I prefer the old style robots. I do remember as kids, me and my cousin had done the very same thing sans costume. We just fold our body into various shapes and call it a vehicle or what have you. I don't think I'll be able to make a workable transformer costume in a million years, but it looks like a lot of fun if not nerdy. lol.

The Versatility of Duct Tape

>> Tuesday, October 20, 2009

Turns out making a duct tape costume can be quite complicated. Well, I'm still rushing ahead but there is a whole world within the duct tape costume community. People win prizes, scholarships, become prom kings and queens or at the very least, cause a spectacle.

The avid duct tape costume pro would actually create duct tape fabrics and then use the fabrics to tailor a form fit suit or costumes:

Nope, not for me. While I went to the bookstore looking for a book about duct tapes, the store clerk asked me whether I was an art student of sorts. It took some convincing for her to believe that I was just being creative and eccentric. Just look at these people:

More costume can be seen here and here and the tape is also featured quite often here.

I guess you've got to be just a bit crazy to create a costume out of duct tape. It'd be a lot easier to convince people that I'm a psychopath and just buying tapes for easy disposal of a body or two. Well, I'll keep some leftovers. Who knows? Right?

Halloween Abound

>> Sunday, October 18, 2009

I always thought I like wintry weathers but these few days of drizzly rains and with temperatures around 30s and 40s are really off-putting. Leaving the window a tad open for fresh air turned out to be a bad idea, but then closing it make the whole apartment a sound box, everything my neighbors are doing upstairs pass midnight are emphasized like they are moving furniture or something, every time they walk around makes it sounds like they are playing basketball with their feet squishing against the floor. Maybe my ceiling will one day crumble down and be done with it.

I hope the weather will warm up a bit in the following two weeks, especially for Halloween. The boyfriend with his new muttonchops are planning to go out for drinks in a Logan costume, we've gotten a flannel shirt and some claws. He's going to look real cute, which he already does in or out of costume anyhow. Me on the hand is another entirely different story. I thought about doing Frankenstein, since I do regard my forehead as a little large, almost a five-head, so it could be fitting.

I've also thought about dressing up as one of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence. I have a friend who was very much into the convent. I do believe wearing a bra (wimple) on my head, painting my face white, wearing a black low-cut tutu with my chest hair sticking out with gender-freak out quite a bit of folks. It should be quite fitting for Halloween and afterwards I can say that I've done drag. On the downside though, I might get harassed by homophobes and it might freak out the boyfriend too much and never get sexed again. Besides, the acquired girl's clothes are probably not refundable and picture me going to Victoria's Secret trying on bras on my head.

So to match up the Boyfriend a little bit without going all matchy-matchy, I've chosen to be Colossus this year. Colossus is tall, he has black hair and a larger forehead too, I might be able to pull it off. I went to a major costume store in NYC but it turned out they don't have much X-men costumes, so it is going to be a duct-tape costume. It's a bit ambitious I know, but we do sorta have a DIY spirit and it seems like a fun thing to do. I have already bought a pair of super hero red boots from Target. Since Colossus has a silver body, I'm going to wear an old white long sleeve t-shirt and long johns and use the silver duct tape to wrap all around mimicking the silver stripe pattern of Colossus. Red and yellow duct tape for the torso, the belt and I'll use red duct tape to wrap around a pair of boxer-shorts, with some card board and silver face paint, it just might work. Maybe next year I can reuse some stuff and be Omega Red.

Maybe I can pad some duct tape up to imitate muscles? lol.

Street Fighter (Muni Edition)

>> Friday, October 16, 2009

I've resisted posting this as usually I feel quite embarrassed posting any videos involving my own people making a big scene. It's silly self-hatred, I know. But after the crazy Chinese lady throwing a fit in Hong Kong, the crazy girlfriend who got into a car inside the dealership showroom and threaten her boyfriend that she'll drive threw the windows if he refuse to buy the car for her amongst other equally embarrassing videos we have this lovely addition:

Two ladies (if you can call them that) fist fighting in a San Francisco Muni bus over a seat. The background as told by the Chinese lady in her heavily accented mandarin and a bystander older gentleman who's egging on the fight. The Chinese lady was trying to get a seat while the Black lady was sitting down with her bag occupying an empty seat. When the Black lady didn't move her bag after being asked, the Chinese lady took the initiative to move it away and got slapped in the hand and the whole argument starts. While the Black lady yelled at the Asian lady that she had no rights to touch her stuff, the Asian lady starts to yell back "You're Stoopid!" and then "Fark You!", then you can see the Black lady started throwing the first punch and got her ass kicked.

I watched an episode of Family Feud the other day and one of the answers to the question "Name one of the places that you're surrounded by grumpy people" was "Bus/Public Transportation" and I didn't know why. But apparently different cities have different system and some are better than others. The guy who taped the video put up side notes that he himself had been attacked two days before this incident and from my experience in San Francisco it can get pretty crowded and sometime right around 5 or 6 O'clock, you can see hobos bringing bags of smelly recycling materials on the bus or trolley to go to recycling facilities to cash in before they close.

Good thing I'm still sorta a young'un and can stand for the duration of most bus rides. If I get to an age or a state that I really want to seat down and something like that happens to me and I get punched in the face. I will so trip the other person on the floor straddle and pummel his/her face until that person is exterminated. I have to give some prop to my Asian sister to hold back on that can of whoop ass until the other person threw the first punch. Although that accented yelling and cursing business is quite unattractive.

Speaking of which, maybe an American video game developer can make a 2-D fighting game with viral video stars? I would like to see this Asian lady, Afro Ninja, Star Wars kid and the DEA agent who shot himself in the foot. Hm... Who else? And can we have the Muni bus for at least one round?

Cheap Computers in Sight

>> Thursday, October 15, 2009

Hear ye, hear ye, y'all! Hewlett Packard owned Comapaq just came out with a few laptop and desktop models that will be sold at a low, low price.

For the same price as a high-end netbook, the Compaq CQ61 nets you a 15.6-inch dispay powered by a dual-core AMD Sempron M100 processor (2GHz, 512KB L2 cache). Other specs include 2GB RAM, ATI Radeon HD 4200 graphics, a 160GB hard drive, a DVD burner, Windows 7 Home Premium, and a 6-cell battery. The machine is priced for $399 releasing on October 22. Compaq Presario 4010f with a 250 GB hard drive and other similar specs is selling for $309 after rebate on the same day.

I've accidentally cracked my laptop screen a month or two ago, along with a computer virus that requires me to wipe my computer clean and start again had me yearning to get a brand new one. After all, I have been using this Vaio for the past 5 years and it is quite outdated and time for it to retire. My Straizian friends had told me to wait til black Friday when there are major discounts for everything and maybe skip to Delaware for the tax free stores. With this news, I am really tempted.

Plus now that Compaq came up with these highly economical laptops, maybe the other brands will follow suit and drop prices. Maybe in a few months I can get another Vaio for cheap to last me another half a decade? Here's to wishful thinking!

Low-lives In Action (Warning: Violent Content)

>> Wednesday, October 14, 2009

I've seen a movie where the plot of it goes something like this: There's a mysterious video tape contain content so vile that if anyone had viewed it, the viewer will lost all hope in humanity and agreed that all humans should be exterminated from the face of the earth. I guess the following video would be a part of the tape.

Two humans viciously beating up another human being because he has a different sexual orientation, causing the victim to be in a coma with two collapsed lungs, multiple broken ribs, spleen and liver damage. All the more outrageous, one of the attackers who got arrested is now claiming self-defense. I feel ashamed to be regarded as the same species as the attackers. Can't we neuter these low life to make sure they never reproduce?

The ironic thing is that if the victim is actually a dog, Peta and the media will be all over it and yet like the National Equality March, no one cares to report about the gays. The value of life is skewed if they don't agree with you, how shameful!

Time A-Facebooking

>> Tuesday, October 13, 2009

A year ago, I would have told you that I don't care about Facebook much. I didn't use it then, I created an account because a dozen or two of friends keep sending me emails asking me to join and I'm tired of receiving those invitation emails, so I just created a presence so to shut them up. I was more of a MySpace kinda guy. Now, I actually have to look up what the name for MySpace actually is. i haven't touched it for months and don't think I'd ever use it again. There was a migration, the old space was dry and deserted, everyone had moved to the new land.

Other than this blog, I'm actually quite the reserved private person, there's nothing much exciting in my life that I'd have to report to my friends hour by hour. At the same time, I don't really call a lot of people my friends. There are polite acquaintances but I wouldn't necessarily want to impose my daily activities on them. Though, the nosy voyeur in me appreciates the others for their status updates to give me a glimpse in their lives. For the relatives and friends overseas that I don't get to see much, it's particularly nice to see their new pictures and I do try my best to return the favor when a good one of mine pop up every now and then.

Other than it being a way of communication and networking, I've discovered the gaming aspect of Facebook. There are a lot of developers creating flash based application on Facebook. From your basic questionnaire type application that tells you which Sex & The City girl you are, to more complex time killing machines. You have your standard Word Twist, Sudoku, Bejeweled Blitz.

From the repeated nagging from my straizian Mahjong friends, I've tried out a few recommended games. There were a slew of FaceBook friends who constantly update people on their achievements on farming games, such as Farmville, Country Story, Happy Farm. Simple premise, go to a farm area, buy and plant a seed, water your plant, plucking weed, killing bugs, wait for the plant to grow crops, harvest and sell you crops. Not particularly fun, given most of the time you have to wait hours or days for the crop to grow. Graphic-wise Happy Farm seems to be the best and it seems to be a very popular game in Asia where workers rumored to request for Happy Farm breaks for them to go online and check on their crops. Since it doesn't produce real money, I wonder why they make such a big deal out of it. My straizian friends create phony Facebook accounts to set up a few farm so they can speed up the coin earning aspects and manipulate the game. I have time on my hands but I doubt that I could get that fanatic.

Simulated games seems to be the trend. That's a simulated aquarium game called Happy Aquarium with similar scheme. Feed your fish, raise them, clean you tank, wait for hour for them to grow up... boring, does not particularly makes me Happy. Pet Society, where you create your own pet and do really silly things with them, entirely too childish for me. Cafe World where you run and design your own cafe, make dishes and sells to your customers. Takes days to hours to cook and sell to your customers. I'm automatically drawn to anything food related, so I kinda like it. My 40 year old cousin is actually a big fan on all of these games, she let it known from her often updates notification on all of them. My favorite game of all is God Game Mahjong, where it connects you with other players to play Mahjong and other Asian card games. It's a lot of fun hearing Chinese and looking at great graphics while playing. Too bad most of the above mention games all takes to much time to commence and all wants you to lose somehow so you can purchase more credit using real cash.

I realize it is a waste of time, especially in a time I should be looking for a job. It especially do more harm to my laptop than good, it particularly turns my laptop as hot as a frying pan, so I'll try to cut it back and do more constructive things, it's not like I can earn real money from playing. I know.

Aren't You Hard 'N Phirm?

The Boyfriend and I watch a G4 show called Web Soup which is sort of a new spin off of E!'s The Soup. Web Soup take the same concept with VH1's Web Junk 20 or Comedy Central's Tosh.0 which is just showing funny and interesting amateur clips found online and show it to the TV audience in a categorized format like The Soup. These clips shows are like some sort of news program to me, capturing what happened online during the week, since the Internet is such a big part of our lives now. The Boyfriend and I like them. Chris Hardwick, the host of Web Soup, was coming to Philadelphia for a stand up show, so the Boyfriend and I got tickets to go see him at the Trocadero last night.

I guess you can say the Trocadero is an institution in Philly. Located in Chinatown, they often host underground rock and punk concert which seems odd at times when the attendees are so un- and non-Chinese, wearing black T-shirt and wearing goth make-up lining up to go into the venue. In the past 10 years of my time here, I've never got the chance to go and see inside, so I'm glad to have the chance to do so.

Honestly, I wasn't quite excited to see Chris Hardwick perform, I much rather go see Joe McHale but I guess it is that I didn't know much about the guy but that was probably because the guy's porn-staresque name escaped the me and I didn't recognize who he is until the opening act person turns out to be Mike Phirman, which I've just seen a Comedy Central special with them two together and referred themselves to be the comedy group Hard 'N Phirm which they like to perform odd ball comedies and do funny songs together.

They are essentially two nerds who made it big, both funny and witty, we were pretty entertained. Some of the bits include singing a song about Pi and reciting digits down to the 50th place, singing a song in Spanish about the real functions of the heart, dinosaurs, girls and other nerdy topics. My favorite is when they did some Harry Potter jokes in a session called the Hogwarts Snaps:

"Your momma so fat, the sorting hat put her in all four houses."
"Your momma so fat, her wand is a Slim Jim."
"Your momma so fat, her patronus is a cake."

Go see them if they stop by in your area.

The Miracle of Life (Wildlife Edition)

A mini documentary about an elephant giving birth in an Elephant Safari Park in Bali, Indonesia. It's quite graphic and moving at the same time. It shows you how intelligent elephants are.

Quite cute and also cute:

Other than being in the verge of extinction, it seems that the lazy giant pandas do have something to contribute to our society in general. Well, not as much as the panda themselves, but their poop. Panda poop is very rich in fiber from their munching on bamboos all day and it can be made into paper, but what's more is...

Via Pink Tentacle

One Japanese and two Chinese scientists work together to ponder how pandas can digest something as fibrous as bamboo. And after identifying 270 different kinds of microorganisms in panda dung obtained from Tokyo’s Ueno Zoo, the researchers isolated five types of bacteria that were the most efficient at breaking down proteins and fats and that could reproduce easily even under high heat.

In one experiment, the researchers mixed the bacteria with 70 to 100 kilograms (lbs) of raw garbage, including vegetable stems, potatoes (raw and fried) and fish remains, and placed it in an industrial waste disposal machine. Seventeen weeks later, only 3 kilograms (6.6 lbs) of waste remained, while the rest had turned to water and carbon dioxide. With a digestive rate of up to 96%, the bacteria from panda excrement is significantly more effective than most commercial disposal bacteria, which has a digestive rate of around 80%.

Their discovery had earned them an Ig Nobel Prize.

Getting Ready In 5 Minutes, Part Deux

>> Wednesday, October 07, 2009

After last month's clip of Getting Ready In 5 Minutes. The folks at 8Asians found the housewife version, which requires a month to wake her son up, get him changed, washed, make him breakfast and lunch and take him out the door and to the school bus.

Other than the weird mom sleeping on the kid beginning, I have three questions: Doesn't the takoyaki grill needs some time to heat up, like my George Foreman? What did mom wrote on the kid's shirt and why is it necessary? Isn't that highly inappropriate (especially in Japanese culture) for the kid to pull off his mom's pants? No trauma (i.e. Oedipus complex), really?

I'm sure the single mom situation is not easy.

Wanna Take This Outside?

>> Tuesday, October 06, 2009

It's already the first week of October, so I guess we can call it Fall now. It's not beating down sunshine and the weather had cooled down, going out had became enjoyable again.

The past Saturday there was a great street fair in Philly with a weird name, it's called the Fourth Fall Festival in the Midtown Village. After living in Philly for nearly a decade, I've just started to find out that the center city part of Philadelphia had little districts with names that I've never heard of. A few weeks ago, the boyfriend and I stumbled on a sign saying French Quarter around Rittenhouse Square and I thought that was a New Orleans-only reference. Anyhow, in the past 4 years or so, Midtown Village had been bought up by a developer and transformed the two block area into various shops, bars and restaurants. A lesbian couple has opened up 2-3 ethnic restaurants and a corner prepared food store called Grocery. One of my favorite home goods stores are also located in the same block. It's all brand new and very exciting. The street fair provided an excellent occasion to get people into the area and promote the shops.

The Japanese restaurant brought out the big guns to attract customers.

I guess it's partly because of the weather but I haven't seen that many people out in a while. Also due to the occupants of the block, this fair turned out to be more food and drinks related than anything else which I really do appreciate. Mexican, Indian, Japanese, various BBQ food, chocolate, gelati, baked goods, all lined up in one for purchase. I had an order of pulled pork tacos from one of the Stephen Starr restaurants, which was good. An Indian spiced chili dog which tasted great but require a spoon to eat after the flimsy bun got too soggy to hold itself up and a mango lassi that wasn't quite cold enough to be refreshing. I was tempted to get a $2 pork slider from the Marriot restaurant but I guess I was full by then. The side streets were crawling full of booze vendors, though I did not have a single drink. It was a great event on a great day.

Cute, but I think I've made tastier tacos. (Lol, everyone is a critic.)

This Sunday is the National Coming Out Day and in Philly we have OutFest which is a GLBT street fair that happens once a year in our Gayborhood. It's the less commercial version of Pride and what it's used to be before setting up camp elsewhere and charging a $10 admission. Different organization having booths to recruit members, different causes excepting signatures and donations, corporate sponsors building alliances and relationships. Gay guys who likes to see and be seen. You know? The usual.

At the same time, DC is having the National Equality March for us gays to raise awareness and demand our rights. Since we seems to have a competent president in the White House this time around, maybe showing up in numbers will do some good. Though I have to say the recent health reform efforts had been quite discouraging, but it maybe politicians no matter which party they're in will always choose the side of money and it might not have to do with the competency of the president. (Eh, did we just put the abstinence only sex ed back in place?) Anyway, I'm always cynical on what good will a protest or a march could achieve, but then I know sitting on my ass won't do much good either. Besides, it could be the biggest GLBT march in our generation, if it's not for the historic side of it, think of the potential number of hot guys and celebrity sightings. And if it's not for the march, what about the cruising of bars after the march?

The only problem for me is as always - transportation. While there is a relatively inexpensive bus going to DC from Chinatown, they only operate 3 times a day and if the march starts at 12:00 noon, I may have to rise in a good awful hour and still be late for the event. I couldn't possibly afford to stay overnight and it could well be all booked up by now. So my best bet is to find a friend who is going to drive down and see if I can bum a ride, or maybe hitchhike down to DC, maybe I could get a sense what Woodstock was like.

Go to the site to learn more. (Honestly though, it seems like the site and its message was put together in a hurry, doesn't it?)

Movie Review: Zombieland

>> Sunday, October 04, 2009

Went to see Zombieland with the boyfriend because he likes zombies and it seems like a fun movie. For some strange reasons I have found Woody Harrelson to be quite sexy, Matthew McConaughey and him seems to emit the same kind of energy even though Woody has a lot less hair.

Anyway, zombie movie... another virus outbreak. In the beginning of the movie, they showed a globe seemingly destroyed; The oceans seemed to have gone and replaced by and gleaming, menacing red lava lines. In this post apocalypse world, most people had been turned into zombies, so a young kid nicknamed Columbus developed a list of rules for himself in order to survive. Along the way, he meets a crude drifter that takes too much joy out of zombie slaying and driving big cars, also two female tricksters that have serious trust issues, but who can blame them? The zombies are everywhere.

Lately, I've seen a couple of movies that features fast moving zombies, zombies that can run, climb and jump. I always thought that zombies were slow and move in drones, that's why it wasn't exactly threatening to me, but these are different. Other than the usual goo spewing, broken limbs and the chewing of human flesh, it was explained that the virus they contracted inflamed their brains and make them violent and hungry, but how come they only attack humans and not each other?

But that's besides the point. It's about fright and flight and big guns! Inventive ways to smash and kill zombies. To the contrary of the common sense on epidemic outbreaks the quartet chose to go to a metropolis and go to an attention grabbing venue at night, but of course it's not logic that we needed, they were asking for trouble for sure. I especially enjoyed the opening sequence of the rules and zombie outbreaks, smashing stuff in a Native American souvenir shop, flashy guns and different action sequences. It's like being a little kid at the candy shop, though the ending sequence is a little bit lazy. I would enjoy a Kill Bill style sequence with more inventive ways to kill then guns.

It was fun, it could be more enjoyable if there were more substance, in the form of a few more rules might work. B

Weekend Meme: The Alpha Meme

>> Saturday, October 03, 2009

This week, the Boyfriend and I went around to take some pictures with his Legos. the Boyfriend is a huge Lego minifigs fanatics. We walked around town to take some cute pics with them but at the end of the day, he didn't like any pics that I take at all. Phooey... Maybe I'll post them here later in a more appropriate time.

Since the upper and under 2 cents have both done this, I thought I'll make my own attempt.

My roommate and I once: shared a can of cherry coke. He was my first roommate at a college that I thought I'd attend. After I've heard that I need 2 years of prerequisite work for course and that I've been accepted at another college, I moved away after 6 weeks.

Never in my life have I: been so old. (Like now... and now...! Ha!)

High school was: one of the happiest periods in my life. Lots of friends and lots of hanging out time.

When I’m nervous: I become very talkative, that would be called a 'tell' when I gamble.

My hair: is looks best when it's short and washed everyday.

When I was 5: my uncle took me to Southern France

Count the candles.

When I turn my head left: someone is playing air bowling on TV.

I should be: so lucky. Lucky, lucky, lucky. I should be so lucky in love. (Kylie US Tour, get into it.)

By this time next year: I should be working. (Oh, come on!)

My favorite aunt is: my aunt Grace who's always pleasant have around.

I have a hard time understanding: how anyone can insist on being ignorant. (i.e. homophobia, racism, the existence of Fox News, going against health care reform and the public option.)

You know I like you if: I tease you. I have to feel comfortable enough with someone to cross that impolite boundaries.

My ideal breakfast is: Sunny side eggs with turkey sausage, home fries and buttered white toast. Orange juice and a tall glass of ice tea on the side.

If you visit my home town: take me with you. I'd need a tour guide myself. Though maybe you can bring me back some stuff.

If you spend the night at my house: then you'll be forced to share a bed with me. My place is not that big. And yes, I'd most likely to take advantage of you.

The animal I would like to see flying besides birds: humans. I'd love to be able to fly.

I shouldn’t have been: born. I was an accident but yet here I am!

Last night I: saw Zombieland with the boyfriend, I'll report back on that later.

A better name for me would be: The Great Procrastinator!

I’ve been told I look like: I'm Korean, a lot.

If I could have any car, it would be: A blue AC Cobra with white stripes. A few years ago, I've seen a great looking car on the street that might have been a lotus. It's blue with white stripes. It's showy in a trashy nouveau riche kinda way, I love it.

What do y'all think about trunk space?

Hope you feel appreciated and have a great weekend!

Because I'm Such a Nice Guy...

>> Friday, October 02, 2009

Last week when A&Y threw a party, the one that I happened to have made a cheesecake, helped move and won some money at the mahjong table, they had also given me an industrial mouse trap. We have mice in our building, not fierce huge rats, but little bratty mice. Since I cook so much at my place, they like to come to hang from time to time. They don't do much harm but it's just annoying, really, and I'm not much for uninvited guests.

So late last night after I went to bed, I heard a loud clank like a robot had stepped on the ground and then a lot of lighter metal clinking sounds followed. Somehow I've forgotten that I've set out the metal trap and apparently one of the mice got caught. It's one of the humane trap that doesn't kill the mice and it's designed as a little metal tunnel where the mice see the other end and thinks that it's a passageway but in the middle of the tunnel there's a trigger where it'd turn and flip them to the other side of the box with a little glass window so the user can see what's in there. It is also recurring where it will keep catching mice until it's full. I try to ignore the noise as much as I can until I wake up in the morning.

My friends had instructed me that I could perhaps starve the mice to death or submerge the whole contraption in water to drown the caught creatures, but I know it's not something that I can do. So here I am with the cage in my hand walking two blocks away and release the mouse near a park. The mouse leap out two foot away, if there was ever a record for the furthest leaping mouse, it could have broke it. Here's to hope it doesn't run back to my building and make a habit of being my roommate. And if he does, maybe he can tell his little friends (assuming that he has any) to leave me alone too.

Gone to my barber yesterday afternoon to get a cut this afternoon in Chinatown. The guy had been cutting my hair for the past 8~10 years, followed him around 3 different barbershop until he got his own, I guess I can call him a friend. I've known him before he knew his wife when I thought he might be gay and now he's expecting his third child. Time flies. In the past, he had me helped him repairing his computer. Yesterday, he asked me to see if I can go to his lawyer's office to help translate something to him. Apparently 2 years ago someone fell down in front of his barbershop and now the person is attempting to get some compensation out of it.

My barber has insurance just for these kinds of occasions, so everything is taken care of. The person who fell, didn't fell because of there were merchandise in the way or because of the street is badly repaired, so I don't think it'll stick. Since he is sorta a friend and I don't want people to take advantage of him just because he doesn't speak much English, I guess I'll go help him even though the meeting is three weeks from now at 9:15am and I haven't woken up that early for anything for a while. At least, it'll give me a sense of belonging and usefulness.

Viral Videos: "100 Greatest Hits on Youtube In 4 Minutes" & "PS22 Chorus Yoga"

>> Thursday, October 01, 2009

The first clip is a montage of the 100 greatest hits on Youtube, though I don't know how it is determined. I guess I've seen about half of them, some on Youtube and some on those clip shows on TV. Pretty nice background music, pretty well made. I especially liked Ninja Cat, but I wonder why the single ladies guy wasn't on it.

The one below is from a music teacher from Staten Island who formed a chorus with his students called PS 22 Chorus who is gaining fame recently for his exceptional work. His taste in music is pretty close to mine, so far he had performed music from Tori Amos, Bjork, Fleetwood Mac, Lady Gaga and Nina Simone. It raises awareness to music education and also each kids are empowered to express themselves physically while singing like little rock stars. It reminds me of how much I enjoy the TV show Glee these days. Watch it, enjoy it.

I've also belonged to several choir when I was young, I wonder how many of those kids will grow up to be gay.
